lost control. we spoke the funeral director who was inside when it happened. he says he was only a few feet away when the car came through. >> we were about to start a celebration of life for one of our clients, and we heard a loud rumbling sound, almost like an earthquake. luckily, no one was in the lobby, and the car came crashing through the lobby. >> preliminary report from witnesses suggests there were two cars involved, possibly in a speed contest or race, down clayton road, with one losing control and ending up in the building behind me. reporter: the teenage driver and passenger were taken to the hospital. both are said to be in serious but stable condition. an elderly man who got a few scrapes was taken to the hospital but his injuries are said to be minor. live in concord. abc-7 news. >> ama: a fire inside a san jose apartment kill twoz grandparents

and their granddaughter. family members say the four-year-old was sleeping in the same bedroom as her grandmother, and her grandfather. they did not escape the fire. sergio quintana is live in san jose what if happened. reporter: we've spent most of the die watching fire repair crews pull out bits and pieces of this damaged apartment complex. this fire has been especially devastating for one family in particular. i talked with one woman who lost her mother, father, and daughter. >> before fire crews arrived, she said she tried to battle the flames by herself. >> i just know my boy's room was on fire. and i ran out and i tried to get the fire extinguisher, and cooperate put it out. >> her brother got out of the apartment, but her parents and her daughter did not.

>> she is my daughter. >> young? >> she was four. >> maria and felix live in the apartment just below. they had three of their grandchildren over for the weekend and heard a commotion as the fear start. they went outside to see what was happening upstairs. >> when i went outside, i could see the fire, so i told them to come out and leave. >> everyone in their apartment got out okay, the they are rushed out, taking only a few items to keep warm. >> she says she quickly grabbed a sweater before running out into the cold evening. they were allowed to return to their apartment today to retrieve some medications and clothes but they'll likely be staying at a local hotel for a few days. they say fire teams got a quick hold on the blaze but specifically mentioned the fast work of a san jose police officer who tried to save people inside the burping apartment. -- the burning apartment.

>> there are still 56 residents of the apartment complex who remain displaced because of the fire. it's still under investigation. as for that police officer who i mentioned in the story, who apparently made some pretty quick work of getting people out, the san jose police have nod released his identity just yet. i'll have more on that at 6:00. reporting live in san jose, sergio quintana, abc-7 news >> ama: man in livermore has been found shot to death near a golf course. a jogger spottedded the body yesterday morning. police identified him is a 28-year-old ken knight -- kenneth ogden. his family and friends will hold a vigil for him tonight at 7:00 near where he was found dead. >> petaluma police arrested a man who was driving drunk with two small children. the 45-year-old was spotted saturday afternoon in front of the washington square safeway. they determined he had been

drinking and driving with his children in the car. he was arrested for dew dui and child endangerment. >> today is the last sunday to park at meters for free. in one week you'll have to pay. in an appeal to religious leaders the city has set up premade options for many meters. >> democrats and republicans are wrangling over last--minute legislation to avert the so-called fiscal cliff. there's no sign of a deal so far. here's the latest. reporter: as senators convened in a rare sunday session, they heard this prayer from the senate chaplain. >> look with favor on our nation, and save us from self-inflicted wounds. >> the clock is ticking towards the new year's midnight hour when tax hikes and budget cuts

swoop ground the fiscal cliff. the two senate leaders, harry reid and mitch mcconnell are working on a stop-gap bill. >> at some point it appears there are things that stop us from moving forward. i hope we're not there, but we're getting real close. >> i want everyone to know i'm willing to get this done but i need a dance partner. >> the legislation would prevent tax increase for roughly 98% of american workers, extend unemployment benefits set to expire for some two million people, and prevent a huge cut in payments to medicare doctors. >> we should go ahead and introduce legs that would make sure middle class taxes stay where they are and should be an up or down vote. >> a deal won't necessarily pass congress by monday night. if it doesn't, virtually everybody's income taxes will go up. the average family would pay an extra $3,462 in 2014.

and farm programs would expire, potentially doubling the price of milk, and if congress doesn't pass new bill? >> we'll come back with a new congress on january 4th and the first bill on the floor will be to cut taxes on middle class families. >> the bargaining continues tonight. >> the fremont please chief has called it quits. he was worked in law enforcement for more than four decade. he will be replaced by the captain. the chief will stay on the job for the next four months to help the transition. >> in two days you'll see new laws take effect in california, one law for private space travel. >> we'll break down this incredible video that show planes crashing into a freeway.

>> break new. hillary clinton has been admitted to the hospital with a blood clot stemming from a concussion she received this month. the doctors found the clot during a followup exam today. she was admitted to a hospital in new york so doctors can treat her and keep an eye on her. on tuesday, several new laws go into effect in california. here's a look at some of them. california bill be the first

state to ban therapy for gay teens. private companies that provide space travel will have greater protection from civil suits in cases of disaster. police will be able to issue silver alerts for missing elderly people, and the state marine reptile will be named the pacific leatherback sea turtle. we'll look at a few more new laws at 6:00. >> police in southern california are looking for the person who stabbed a teenage boy and girl in a mall, leaving them with life-threatening injuries. happened in the galleria in re don dough beach. the boy gave a description of the attacker before he passed out. both victims are in critical can. >> the faa is investigating the cause of a small plane crash in san diego county that killed three members of an arizona family. the home-built plane went down

>> ama: new video shows a plane crashing into traffic in russian. the video is from a passing car. the plane overshot the runway during the landing. one of the plane's tires shot across the road and slammed into a car. the driver was unhurt. the plane ripped apart into three massive pieces, then burst into flames. four people on the plane were killedful the plane was just a few feet airplane from a much busier section of the road. >> visitors to florida's everglades national parking dealing with angry birds. migrating vultures are attacking cars, stripping the rubber and vinyl off the cars. park officials aren't sure why

they're picking on cars, only that the angry birds seem very determined. >> they get down on the vehicle very quickly. only takes just a few minutes to do at that time damage. >> ama: to combat the vultures and protect vehicles park officials are distributing tarps and bungie cords so visitors can cover their cars, and they have put up warning signs in parking lots to alert people of the dangers of these birds. >> authorities in pasadena are warning travelers to arrive the rose bowl early on tuesday. they expect heavy traffic to enclosing the freeway for several hours. you don't have to leave your home too see the parade. you can fight right here on abc-7 enough new year's morning, and mike shumann is already in pasadena and will give is highlights. >> leigh glaser is here ex-checking out the forecast. >> leigh: it's been a terrific day. terrific weekend, and we're looking live now from the

a few high clouds from north to south thanks to a strong jet stream, and also cold northerly winds. so these winds should die down tonight, giving way to cold temperatures, temperatures north and east bay locations, hovering near the freezing mark, even dropping below that in accept rosa, so 30-degree thrvmentz 43 in san francisco, 39 in recommend. oak learned 38. palo alto, 36. san jose, 35. livermore, down to 29 degrees. if you have any sensitive plants, you may want to cover them, bring them in, and don't forget about the pets. here's the setup for at least the first part of the week. we have had high pressure bring us the sunshine today, helping to generate the winds out of the north. it will relax tomorrow. this low is expected to trek to the south, bringing us a few clouds new year's eve. some forecast models bring a little moisture inland. i'm going to keep it out but we

could see a sprinkle or two, mainly right near the coast. monday night, early tuesday morning, but for most intents and purposes most of the rain will stay off the coast. this is monday morning 5:00 a.m. mainly clear sky across the bay area, and then tracking through monday afternoon, you'll definitely get a sense of she clouds starting to move inland. most of the rain will stay off the coast. here is a look at our lows -- excuse me -- highs for tomorrow after a cold start. temperatures will warm up slightly. 54 for santa rosa, 53, napa, san mateo, 53. livermore, after an overnight low tomorrow morning of 29, warm up to 53, and hollister 53. the accuweather seven-day forecast, clouds monday night, ring in the new year on tuesday with sunshine, i want to caution you, wednesday morning, very frosty, a hard freeze expected for the bay area. thursday, a chance of showers,

west. green bay and minute went down to the final seconds, adrian peterson ran for 199 yards on 34 carries but came up just nine yards short of the single season rushing record. that scamper set up this game-winning field goal as the vikings beat the pammeres. -- packers so san francisco gets the fit round by. >> oakland closed out at san diego. with nothing to lose the raiders let terrelle pryor make his first start. crazy weather in southern california. the players were practicing in a hail storm. he weather was fine at kickoff but not so fine. the raiders' special team takes the opening kickoff at the one, races 899 yards for the touchdown. after a slow start, pryor led the raiders on a 12-play, 80-yard drive. then gets his first nfl touchdown pass.
